Why should we care about sex?

There are inherent differences between individuals’ bodies that determine whether they are female, male, some combination of both, or neither. Some of these differences are more obvious, including size, physical features and external genitals.  Other characteristics are less visible, such as biological variations in DNA, tissue types, and hormone levels.

Our biological make-up influences every aspect of our lives, including how our bodies work, how we see ourselves, how we appear to others, what keeps us healthy or makes us sick and what kinds of care we need. It is important, therefore, to understand what the term sex means and looks like and how it affects health and well-being.
